Kansas is the first state to announce the closure of schools for the remainder of the 2019-2020 year due to the coronavirus outbreak. California could soon follow suit.
Many other states in the USA have closed schools but Kansas was the first to announce a closure for the rest of the year. This order covers all state -accredited schools including public, private and parochial campuses.
According to Kansas Governor Laura Kelly, “This was not an easy decision to make... It came after close consultation with the education professionals who represent local school boards, school administrators and local teachers. These unprecedented circumstances threaten the safety of our students and the professionals who work with them every day and we must respond accordingly.”
Over 39 states have already closed down schools, and Florida has cancelled all remaining tests for the school year. Re-opening dates are not yet known but many schools across America could be closed for the rest of the year.
The closure of schools presents interesting challenges. How will students be educated if they are stuck at home without access to internet or the technology they need?
