Americans now have until July 15 to finish filing tax returns for 2019, extended from the original date of April 15.
At first, the administration announced there would be an automatic 90-day extension to pay taxes for those who owe, but now the entire filing date has been changed.
If you are due a tax refund, you are encouraged to file now. US treasury secretary Mnuchin says, "I encourage all taxpayers who may have tax refunds to file now to get your money," he wrote.
As usual, you are still able to request a six-month extension if you need additional time.
These changes only apply to federal tax returns but many states are beginning to make similar deadline adjustments.
